Highly recommended, great book.Andrew Rockwayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13882286275045888441noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6566693580510815870.post-67422666555080293522007-12-02T17:47:00.000+00:002007-12-02T17:47:00.000+00:00I was looking over this in a bookshop the other da...I was looking over this in a bookshop the other day, but I had no money. Novels about New York always fascinate me, and you certainly make a convincing point. Might pick it up now :]Electorrrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09478298571890193330noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6566693580510815870.post-48812124378701868072007-12-01T21:30:00.000+00:002007-12-01T21:30:00.000+00:00I'm not surprised it's inconsequential so far; I g...I'm not surprised it's inconsequential so far; I got to remember not to worry too much about how odd the plot sounds next time I pick one of the shelf in a bookshop. What you describe so far sounds pretty cool...

Hot Water Music is the one I've read, obviously... but I have it on reliable information that Ham on Rye is really, really good. Depends on whether you want a novel or a bunch of short stories. I think I read through my copy of HWM within 24hrs of getting it...

be sure to tell me how you get on!gabbagabbaheyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07764368059568550318noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6566693580510815870.post-35730710077117403422007-12-01T21:10:00.000+00:002007-12-01T21:10:00.000+00:00Yeah, White Noise is about the Hitler scholar. Th...Yeah, White Noise is about the Hitler scholar. That fact, at least so far, is pretty inconsequential. He's not a Nazi sympathizer. So far (I'm about 120 pages in give or take) there's just been a pretty good discussion on the family dynamic within society. Just got into the "Airborne Toxic Event" section so I'm hoping that most all humans die and robots become the overlords of those remaining. Also, I bought Ham on Rye and Hot Water Music. Gonna try to read at least one of those over winter break.Andrew Rockwayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13882286275045888441noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6566693580510815870.post-51465057624238543122007-11-27T22:46:00.000+00:002007-11-27T22:46:00.000+00:00ha... I get the image of the Ramones' Subterranean Blues album cover whenever I think about it.

the subway scene in Kerouac's Town and the City pretty funny, what with the newspaper and all.

I was also pretty lucky recently to see the film Pelham 123 on TV. 1970s crime thriller starring Walter Mathau about a gang of armed men (led by an evil English mastermind) who hijack a subway train. Great movie.

so yeah, subways for all!

(except for me... all I have is the DART - see this post and Flann O'Brien's "toy railway"gabbagabbaheyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07764368059568550318noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6566693580510815870.post-82908445138464733002007-11-27T19:24:00.000+00:002007-11-27T19:24:00.000+00:00this sounds like a great book. I have heard of it ...this sounds like a great book. I have heard of it before, but for some reason I wrote it off as a Mob story.

Those blurbs from the subway riding experience are incredible. the way he describes the sounds and the people and the motion... really true to life... seen from the eyes of someone who knows the subway intimately...

having spent quite a bit of time (the past 10 years) riding the subways daily, i can safely say that is one of the best creative descriptions of its sights and sounds.blend77https://www.blogger.com/profile/15363982891479614565noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6566693580510815870.post-61780929394064971982007-11-26T17:55:00.000+00:002007-11-26T17:55:00.000+00:00IMPORTANT NOTICEI've just noticed that this blog w...IMPORTANT NOTICE

I've just noticed that this blog was set only to allow comments from registered users, i.e. Blogger profiles. I think I remember seeing it in a bookshop and being slightly put off by the plot blurb!
Not that it
matters really, like I said the plot is probably secondary to his style...

Cosmopolis is a very good one of his too, quite short but kinda similar to this.

Forgot to mention in this post, though I'm sure I mentioned previously, but I discovered him because the cover of Fight Club announced Palahniuk as this generation's DeLillo.

Anyway, thanks for the comment, andrew.
